The Slammer

The Slammer is a simple rudimentary concrete cube with a barred window and a wooden door with a rusty lock. Located in the Glade, the Slammer is similar to a prison from the Middle Ages. The interior consists only of a wobbly chair. The Slammer lies between the farm and the North Wall, just behind a bush of uncut brambles, in what appears to be the darkest corner of the block. It is tormented by rats and seems to be the most secure place in the Glade.

The Gladers may be locked inside for varying periods of time according to their misdeeds, but must first be considered by the Council and the vote must reach the majority without necessarily being unanimous. Those who commit really bad crimes end up spending much more time in the Slammer, so all they can do is reflect on their actions.

Gladers imprisoned

  • Ben : for having attempted to kill Thomas, breaking the Number Two Rule.
  • Thomas : for having breaking the Number One Rule.
  • Teresa : for having been responsible of the Doors' non-closure; it was so surprising and unprecedented that there wasn't a rule in place.
